Peter Bonta opened his own recording studio, Wally Cleaver's, located in northern Virginia. Steve Cooper and Steve Brigida partnered with Washington DC guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Jeff Smith and continue to record and play live with Smith as the Band of Steves. The band broke up after the departure of Billy Paliselli in 1982. He was replaced by Peter Bonta on piano and guitar and they signed to Ariola Records in 1980. Their next album, Babes On Broadway (1977), also did not sell well, and Cox left the band. During the summer of 1976 the band opened for KISS. This album was not as successful as the first. The next album, Honor Among Thieves (1976), co-produced by Douglas and Eddie Leonetti, featured the power ballad "Scream" as the single. Artful Dodger released their self-titled debut album in September 1975. The band had to choose a new name, as there was already another band named Brat. They were signed to Columbia Records and paired with producer Jack Douglas. Gary Cox traveled with a demo tape to New York City received an offer from the Leber-Krebs management firm. "Long Time Away" was re-recorded for their first album with an increased tempo and more pop feeling. Inglis's bass tracks are featured on "Not Quite Right", the original 45 release B-side "Long Time Away", and the first album release of "New York City". Inglis left the band in 1974 and was replaced by Steve Cooper. Original members were Gary Herrewig (guitar), Billy Paliselli (vocals), Gary Cox (guitar and vocals), Robb Michael Inglis (bass) and Steve Brigida (drums). Artful Dodger's studio releases received high critical praise, but the band was unable to penetrate the charts. The group was heavily influenced by the Beatles, Faces, and the Rolling Stones and drew frequent comparisons to the Raspberries. What began as a handle for the release of underground bootleg recordings quickly blossomed into a musical project creating original material for mainstream release and culminated in the release of It's All About the Stragglers, after the duo went on to work with an array of up-and-coming vocalists.Artful Dodger (formed in 1973 in Fairfax, Virginia) are an American power pop/ rock band, noted for their rock compositions, quick lyrics and vocal harmonies. Many Artful Dodger tracks can be found on the UK garage compilation album series Pure Garage, mixed by DJ EZ. They are referred to in the Streets' single " Let's Push Things Forward". The band is named after a character in the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, due to their numerous early bootlegs. Having reunited in 2017, Hill and Devereux found themselves unable to release new music or perform under their own name. They continue to tour under the name Artful Dodger to this day, performing the music of Hill and Devereux frequently in their sets. In 2001, Hill and Devereux parted ways due to creative differences and the trademark, name and usage rights of 'Artful Dodger' was purchased by Blessed Records.Ĭapitalising on the significant live demand for the group, The owner of Blessed Records DJ Dave Lowe accompanied by MC Alistair adopted the name, in essence creating a cover band.
